Interview with the Development PD of Netmarble's first Console Game, 'Seven Knights - Time Wanderer'

2020.11.17

Netmarble's first console game, <Seven Knights - Time Wanderer> released worldwide November 5th and is based on the Seven Knights mobile RPG IP. <Seven Knights -Time Wanderer-> is a spin-off game that shares the same universe as the mobile game, Seven Knights. The story follows the eighth member of the Seven Knights, Vanessa, who gets thrown into time and space with the magical artifact Sandy as they both try to find their way home.
<Seven Knights -Time Wanderer-> was released on the Nintendo Switch and garnered the intereste of many fans of the original IP. Players can enjoy the real-time turned-based combat centered around elements, beautiful animations, and the fun of collecting different heroes from Seven Knights based on their decisions made in the story. It's a single-player RPG that has a variety of deck depth for strategy, a simple battle system that regular players can enjoy, and has hidden stories with additional content that challenges players as well.
We've met the development PD for <Seven Knights -Time Wanderer->, Byung-gi Kim, to ask him about how it's different from the original Seven Knights, what the core concepts are of Seven Knights - Time Wanderer -, and more!

Q. Please introduce yourself.

Hello. I'm the development PD for <Seven Knights -Time Wanderer-> of Netmarble Nexus, Byung-gi Kim. Nice to meet you.

Q. How do you feel about launching Netmarble's first console game?

I'm nervous since this is the first game from Netmarble released on the Nintendo Switch, but I'm happy to see our hard work has paid off.

Q. How did you start development for a Seven Knights game on the console, and what made you choose the Nintendo Switch as the platform?

We started development to introduce even more players to a different kind of gaming experience with Seven Knights, a game played by over 6 million people around the world. We thought the Nintendo Switch would be the ideal platform to expand the Seven Knights IP and as a new platform for Netmarble.

Q. What should new and familiar players look forward to in the game?

For those who know the original universe, you should have no problem enjoying the game. Even if you aren't familiar with the source material, the game is constructed around a complete story, so you have that to look forward to. <Seven Knights - Time Wanderer -> is about the Time Wanderer, Vanessa, who journeys into incidents in the Seven Knights universe and meets characters (to find Time Crystals). We figured it would be easy to understand as a spin-off where the heroes from Seven Knights come together to help Vanessa escape from the Abyss.

 Q. Why did you choose Vanessa as the protagonist among the vast number of characters?

When we were planning the spin-off, the most important thing was to share the universe of Seven Knights while delivering its own fun story. As we were trying to find a way to achieve this, we ended up adapting the Time Wanderer webtoon based on Seven Knights to fit the game, and naturally reached the conclusion to use Vanessa as the main character.

Q. You mentioned it's a single-player RPG. How did you compose the in-game content, and what's the expected play time?

The game includes the main scenario that goes over the story, a challenge type game mode called Lunanyx, a way to see the heroes' backstories through Egonyx, and much more. The average play time is 20 hours at minimum, but we think players can get up to 40 hours of play time.

Q. What are the similarities and differences with the original on mobile?

The base universe, graphics style, and battle system came from the original, so at a glance the two are very similar. However, the balancing, Battle, controls, UI, BGM, sound effects, resources, growth method, and more were newly created to match the platform of the Nintendo Switch befitting of a complete single-player experience. So the way the story progresses, the way heroes join the party, the battle rules, the Switch-exclusive content, and others are largely different from the original.

Q. The game showcases the real-time turn-based battle system and the colorful animations. How does it differ from the original Seven Knights?

We've adapted the impressive skill effects of the original Seven Knights to the Nintendo Switch so it fits nicely. In the process we focused on making turn-based combat more straightforward and developing UI and UX that would be a good fit for the Switch. Weak points, elements, strikes, and more are all new kinds of content for this title.

Q. If there is a system unique to this game, what would it be?

I think the part where players can strategically create decks in order to have as many ally turns as possible to attack the enemy is where the core of the game is. There are also the Egonyx and Lunanyx systems. Egonyx is a system where players can see the backstories of heroes that aren't available in the original. Players will be able to see different sides of characters based on their choices made in the story as well. Lunanyx is a system where the player can select buffs/debuffs, defeat randomly spawning monsters, and make it to the furthest checkpoint. The further players go, the more points they earn.

Q. Finally, anything to say to the players who are looking forward to the game?

Hello. I'm Byung-gi Kim, the PD of <Seven Knights -Time Wanderer->. Netmarble's first game on the Switch platform, <Seven Knights -Time Wanderer-> will be releasing soon. We worked hard to make the game have a different kind of fun for those who enjoyed the original Seven Knights, and to create a complete single-player RPG experience for players mainly on the Switch. Please support the game, and we hope you have fun.
