Three Key Features that Paragon: The Overprime Newbies Need to Know

2023.01.04

Netmarble's new game, Paragon: The Overprime, which inherited the name of Epic Games "Paragon," released early access on December 6th. The completeness of the game was refined through several tests right before early access. Furthermore, Paragon: The Overprime shows great accessibility by launching both Steam and Epic Games Stores in 26 languages.

Paragon: The Overprime has officially entered early access!

Paragon: The Overprime is a MOBA game that has been popular thanks to League of Legends. But at the same time, we can hardly see new MOBA titles in recent years. So a lot of MOBA fans are now jumping into the battlefield of "Paragon: The Overprime."

I also had a history of playing MOBA games. But for Paragon, I was a newbie who hadn’t played before. So I play Paragon for 10 hours to find out the characteristic of this game. As a newbie who played hard, I would like to share my tips for Paragon: The Overprime.

A Newbie's useful tips for Paragon: The Overprime

First, Start with the Tutorial!

MOBA is a subgenre of the game in which two teams of characters compete head-to-head to protect their home base and destroy the towers, turrets, or other structures of the opposing team’s stronghold. This is not much different from Paragon: The Overprime.

To win this game, you must destroy the 'core' which is in the deepest part of the opponent's camp.

However, the detailed system is different even if it’s the same MOBA genre. If it's a single-play game, it's not bad to learn about the game without playing a tutorial. But it’s a different story when it comes to multi-play games like Paragon: The Overprime. If you skip the tutorial, it can be a nuisance to your teammate, and you can be very upset when you meet a powerful opponent.

Therefore, I strongly recommend you clear all tutorials first. The tutorial currently consists of 3 steps. The 1st step is about basic game play such as moving, attacking, and using skills. 2nd is about useful functions such as sending signals and moving automatically. And the third step is about the composition of the game's main battlefield, 'Agnis of Light'.

The tutorial is currently open up to 3 steps

The most important step is step 3. In the final step, you can read descriptions of the overall shape of the battlefield & main objects, and walk around the battlefield. In addition, it guides appropriate heroes for each line, such as Duo-lane, Solo-lane, Mid-lane, or Jungle.

If you clear the tutorial, a small amount of Renar (in-game currency) is given as a reward for each step, so the tutorial is essential even for purchasing the desired hero or skin.

Step 3 teaches you about the feature of each line

Please make full use of the training grounds and item dictionaries. In particular, it is very helpful to play the game if you fully understand the characteristic of the hero. At the training center, you can experience heroes that you’ve not purchased yet and learn various things such as the effectiveness of each hero’s skills, the sense of operation, and the difficulty of control.

In the training ground, you can practice with your favorite hero even if you don't own it

"Paragon: The Overprime" goes through the order of Matching → Accepting Match → Position Selection → Hero Selection. For position selection, you have to choose between solo lane, mid lane, support, duo lane, and jungle.
When you enter the actual battlefield, the players who choose support and duo lane will form a duo and take charge of the duo lane together.

I should have not picked the jungle lane

Among all positions, Jungle is a very special position where you hunt monsters in an area called the “jungle” that is spread widely between lines.  So you have to go back and forth from line to line, to add strength to your teammates. That's why you must keep an eye on each line's situation and move very hard simultaneously. And for the rest of the positions will be held one by one.

All game’s jungle heroes play similar roles. The problem is that the jungle of "Paragon: The Overprime" might be more difficult than the jungle of other games. So if you're new to Paragon: The Overprime, please think twice before choosing a jungle.

An example of a jungler that went wrong from the initial item settings

There are two main points that make Jungle of "Paragon: The Overprime" more tricky. First, the limited viewing angle results from the back viewpoint. In the case of top-view and quarter-view games, you can catch the opponent approaching your character at 360 degrees.

On the other hand, in the case of the back view, it is difficult to recognize the enemy approaching from the back. Of course, it is marked on the mini-map - but from the moment you multitask smoothly, you are not a ‘newbie’.

The next one is a real-life background and terrain. It is very difficult to find directions because of its three-dimensional effect. It might be easier when you leisurely look around the battlefield at the training ground, but in real battles where the situation is tense, you might get lost in an urgent situation.

Attacked by the opponent jungler and get 1-HPed

The three-dimensional map makes it not very easy to find the right way

Of course, the above two points apply to players in all positions. However, Paragon: The Overprime is a game that encourages active support from the jungle and as the map has to be used widely, the pressure on it might feel stronger. In that sense, I highly recommend you experience other positions first. So that you can look at the roles, movements, and item composition of allies and opponent's jungle characters, familiarize yourself, and then try them yourself.

Trust the Hero Recommendation!

In the case of multiplayer-based fighting games, the main strategies and tactics of the game change frequently after various updates such as balance patches, and character renewals. However, Official guidance of character descriptions and recommended items often fail to keep up with the pace of these changes. That's why some gamers don't believe in this ' official guidance'.

Some people search for answers through the community or official sites, while others make their own decisions. The former is less likely to fail because it is a conclusion derived from the power of collective intelligence. But in the case of the latter, if you do not understand the game, you will inevitably fail over and over again. Therefore, it is not recommended for newbies.

Not only position selection was twisted, but also character selection went wrong as well.

After that, I selected a recommended character and successfully played the line game.

Back to the point, "Paragon: The Overprime" explains the suitable position for each hero when you place your mouse cursor above the character. Trust the so-called "Paragon’s developer's official!"

It is still in the early stages of the game's release, and this is the moment when 'the developer's official and actual gameplay match very well.

When starting the game, you may choose your position first then goes to pick a hero. So if you are not assigned to the position you want,  you will often be reluctant to play an unfamiliar character and ignore the recommended one. In this case, It was so hard to deal with 1:1 on the lane. On the contrary, if you made a recommended character for your position, at least the game ran ‘normally’ even if you are not familiar with your character.

You can find out the position that fits each character.

It could be very useful if you are familiar with at least one character for each position. So once again, I highly recommend active use of the training ground.

I enjoyed both the bitter taste of defeat and the joy of victory while playing "Paragon: The Overprime" for about 10 hours. I try really hard to reinforce my understanding of the game, such as reviewing tutorials and practicing a lot in the training ground.

Approaching a 50% winning rate after a disastrous losing streak...

One disappointing point though, was the absence of the function to compete with AIs. If users can battle with AI, they can experience an environment that is almost similar to the actual battlefield. So it can be very helpful for them to raise their skills to a certain level. This is the content that should be added to "Paragon: The Overprime."

Steps Toward Official Launch Continues

Paragon: The Overprime, which started as 'Overprime' and officially acquired the trademark rights for 'Paragon', entered Early Access. Among the works that claimed to inherit 'Paragon', there are not many games that have reached this point.
The reason why "Paragon: The Overprime" succeeded in early access with high recognition is because of constant communication with fans rather than the succession of the name ‘Paragon’.

The quick response to user feedback was very impressive.

This has continued since the beginning of early access. The best example is the drastic price reduction of heroes and skins that was made through server maintenance on December 9th. It was impressive to see how they responded immediately to the voices of users who said that the purchase price of heroes and skins was high.

Now, the next goal of Paragon: The Overprime is an official release that the original paragon couldn't achieve. To do this, Paragon needs to give users more fun. That’s why Paragon started the first event!

During the event period, users can meet four types of winter-themed hero skins, and will receive 11 heroes including Rampage, and Shinbi for free! I think it's the right time to start "Paragon: The Overprime."

The number of heroes has suddenly increased!
